lesson

Hundreds, tens and ones

1 · Learn

Ten tens make one hundred. In 472, the 4 represents 400, the 7 represents 70 and the 2 represents 2.

A zero can hold a place. In 405 there are four hundreds, no tens and five ones. Leaving out the zero would give 45, a different number.

472 = 400 + 70 + 2405 = 400 + 0 + 5
