lesson

Different names, equal amounts

1 · Learn

Equivalent fractions show the same amount of the same whole. Splitting each half into two smaller equal parts makes quarters.

One half and two quarters cover the same length on equal-sized strips. The pieces are smaller, but you use more of them. Do not compare different-sized wholes as though they were the same.

1/2 = 2/41/3 = 2/6
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I shade one third of one strip and two sixths of an equal strip. Their shaded lengths match.

3 · Your turn

Which matches 1/2: 2/4 or 1/4? Explain using equal-sized strips.

Check your answer

2/4. Two quarters cover the same amount as one half; one quarter covers less.

4 · Apply your learning

Fold identical paper strips into halves, quarters and eighths. Find matching shaded amounts.

Adult guidance and safety

Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
