lesson
Read the nearest minute
1 · Learn
The minute hand takes 60 minutes to travel around a clock. Each small division represents one minute when there are 60 equal divisions.
The numbered positions mark five-minute steps. Count from the nearest numbered position to read minutes between them. The hour hand moves gradually too.
2 · Worked example
At 3:17 the minute hand is two minute marks past the 3. The hour hand is a little past 3.
3 · Your turn
Write twenty-three minutes past six as digits. How many minutes remain before seven?
Check your answer
6:23. There are 37 minutes until 7:00.
4 · Apply your learning
Read and draw minute times on a paper clock with sixty divisions. Position both hands carefully.
Adult guidance and safety
Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
