Hear i, remember y

1 · Learn

Say gym. Its middle sound is like the i in sit, but we write y: g-y-m. The letter y does not always make its sound from yes. In these words it stands for a vowel sound.

Read myth, symbol and mystery with an adult. A myth is a traditional story; a symbol is a mark that stands for something; a mystery is something not yet explained. Learn each meaning and spelling together. This is not a rule to replace every i with y.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I hear the short i sound in symbol. I check the model and write s-y-m-b-o-l. In 'The arrow is a symbol for the exit', symbol means a mark with a meaning, not a cymbal, which is a musical instrument.

3 · Your turn

Complete g_m and m_th with the letter learnt today. Say a sentence using either whole word. Would sit become syt?

Check your answer

gym and myth both need y. For example, 'We read a myth about a giant.' Sit keeps i; learning these words does not change all short-i spellings.

4 · Apply your learning

Choose gym, myth or symbol. Look at it, say it, cover it, write it and compare every letter with the model. Explain its meaning to an adult, then use it in a fresh sentence.

Adult guidance and safety

Read aloud together where needed. Discuss more than one reasonable answer to open questions. These short original texts support, but do not replace, whole books, oral discussion, a school-matched phonics programme where needed, or regular handwriting and spelling practice.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
