lesson

Build words ending in -ly

1 · Learn

Many adverbs are made by adding -ly to an adjective: quick becomes quickly. Some spellings change: happy becomes happily and gentle becomes gently.

Use these words where they help the meaning. 'She answered gently' tells us how she answered. Adding an adverb to every sentence is not necessary.

quick → quicklyhappy → happilygentle → gently
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I change the y in happy to i before adding -ly: happily. I reread the sentence to check the word fits.

3 · Your turn

Complete: 'He smiled ___.' Use the -ly form of happy. Spell the -ly form of gentle.

Check your answer

Happily; gently.

4 · Apply your learning

Write one sentence with quickly and one with gently. Explain how changing the adverb changes what the reader imagines.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
