Halves, thirds and quarters

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Fractions describe equal parts of a whole. A half is one of two equal parts. A third is one of three equal parts. A quarter is one of four equal parts.

The parts must be equal in size. Three unequal pieces are not thirds just because there are three pieces.

A length can have equal parts too. Mark a 12 cm strip at 4 cm and 8 cm. Its three equal lengths are each 4 cm. We write 1/3 of 12 cm = 4 cm.

2 · Worked example

I split 12 counters into three equal groups. Each group has four, so one third of 12 is 4. I write 1/3 of 12 = 4. For a strip I also write the unit, cm.

3 · Your turn

What is one quarter of 8 counters? Explain how to share them. What is one quarter of an 8 cm strip?

Check your answer

2 counters. Share eight counters into four equal groups. The strip has four equal 2 cm lengths, so 1/4 of 8 cm = 2 cm.

4 · Apply your learning

Fold paper into equal halves and quarters. Use counters to make thirds of a suitable quantity. With a ruler, draw a 12 cm line and mark three equal lengths; check that none is longer than another.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical objects before symbols. Read the task aloud when needed and ask the child to explain, not just name an answer. Revisit with different examples; one successful answer is not proof of fluency.
