Read your writing like a reader

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

After writing, reread every sentence. Does it make sense? Did you leave out a word? Are the events in a useful order?

You can improve one thing at a time. Check the meaning first, then capitals, sentence endings and taught spellings. An adult or partner can ask helpful questions.

2 · Worked example

I wrote 'The dog the ball.' I notice a missing action. I change it to 'The dog chased the ball.'

3 · Your turn

Improve 'mia went park' into a complete sentence with punctuation.

Check your answer

Mia went to the park. This adds to and the, a capital for Mia and a full stop.

4 · Apply your learning

Reread your own short story or account of a real event. Make one improvement, then read it aloud so someone can hear it clearly.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
