lesson
Letters and sounds
Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.
1 · Learn
The letters a, e, i, o and u are vowel letters. Say their names with an adult. Letter names and the sounds in a word are not always the same.
Two letters can work together to spell one sound. In rain, ai spells the middle sound. In play, ay spells that sound. Practise only sounds your adult has taught you.
2 · Worked example
I say the sounds in rain and blend them into the word. I notice that ai stays together for one sound.
3 · Your turn
Which two letters spell the ending sound in play? Name the five vowel letters.
Check your answer
ay; a, e, i, o, u.
4 · Apply your learning
With an adult, sort taught words with ai and ay. Read each word by blending, then read it again smoothly.
Adult guidance and safety
Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
