lesson

Now or before?

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

A verb helps tell us what happens or what someone does. Tense helps show when. 'I walk' is present tense. 'I walked' is past tense.

Not every past-tense verb ends in ed. 'I go' becomes 'I went'. Keep the time in your writing clear rather than changing it by accident.

Today I walk.Yesterday I walked.Today I go.Yesterday I went.
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I write about yesterday: 'We went to the park. We played.' Both verbs fit the past time.

3 · Your turn

Choose the word for yesterday: 'Yesterday we go / went to the shop.'

Check your answer

Went: 'Yesterday we went to the shop.'

4 · Apply your learning

Tell someone about a real event that already happened. Write two sentences and check their tense.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
