lesson
Join with and, but or or
Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.
1 · Learn
A conjunction can join ideas. And adds an idea. But can show a contrast. Or can offer a choice.
'I like apples and I like pears' adds two ideas. 'I wanted to play outside, but it was raining' shows a problem with that wish.
2 · Worked example
I write 'Would you like water or milk?' because I am offering a choice.
3 · Your turn
Choose a joining word: 'The box is small __ it is heavy.'
Check your answer
But is a good choice because the two ideas contrast: 'The box is small but it is heavy.'
4 · Apply your learning
Join two spoken ideas about a familiar object. Explain why you chose and, but or or.
Adult guidance and safety
Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
