What is unsaid can matter on stage

1 · Learn

Original scene: [A suitcase stands between Jo and Malik.] JO: You packed early. MALIK: The train is at seven. JO: I know when the train is. [Silence. Jo moves the suitcase away from the door.]

The dialogue gives practical information but the repeated reference to timing does not resolve the emotional issue. Jo's movement can suggest reluctance to let Malik leave. Performance must remain grounded in the words and stage action.

2 · Worked example

Moving the case away from the door can resist departure without an explicit request to stay. A different performance could emphasise tidying, but would need to account for the tense exchange.

3 · Your turn

Which action most directly supports an interpretation that Jo resists the departure?

Check your answer

Moving the suitcase away from the door.

4 · Apply your learning

Perform two plausible readings and justify your choices with specific details rather than adding an invented backstory as fact.

Adult guidance and safety

Teach from the supplied text and accept justified alternative interpretations. Do not invent quotations, audience reactions or historical facts. Whole-text literature, selected authors and poetry breadth remain unfinished core work. Exam-board assessment pathways are a later addition, outside this edition.
