lesson

Choose details through a perceiving mind

1 · Learn

Description becomes purposeful when details reflect a viewpoint. A familiar corridor may seem welcoming to one person and threatening to another. Precise verbs and selected sensory details can imply that difference without listing every sense.

Avoid piling adjectives onto every noun. Read: The corridor stretched beyond the last working light. The verb and lighting already shape an uneasy impression.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

Changing 'stretched' to 'opened towards the sunlit courtyard' changes the expectation through direction and light, not merely by adding 'happy'.

3 · Your turn

Which detail makes the supplied corridor feel uncertain or uneasy?

Check your answer

It continues beyond the last working light, leaving what lies ahead unseen; 'stretched' reinforces its extent.

4 · Apply your learning

Describe the same place from two viewpoints using three deliberately chosen details in each.

Adult guidance and safety

Teach from the supplied text and accept justified alternative interpretations. Do not invent quotations, audience reactions or historical facts. Whole-text literature, selected authors and poetry breadth remain unfinished core work. Exam-board assessment pathways are a later addition, outside this edition.
